Answering the Tough questions Part 3

Marc Nuessen, October 27, 2013
Part of the Answering the Tough Questions series.

Matt 21:23-27 Jesus begins a debate of logic with the Jews regarding truth
John 18:33-38 Pilate Pilate asks what is truth.
The same question is posed if we think something can be true for one person and not for another.
- The lost may believe that religious beliefs just reflect where we are raised.
- The lost may believe reality is something we shape with our minds.
- The lost may believe objective morality is what society/culture makes it.
- The lost may believe Christian believes are just one of many ways to make it to heaven.
Col 2:6-8 We are to beware of philosophies that deceive
But does this type of relativity really follow the laws of logic?
1) The law of identity. If a statement is true it is true. 2+2=4.
a. Psalm 119:160 God’s righteous Truth will endure forever.
2) The law of non-contradiction. If a statement is true it can’t be false. 2+2 can’t equal 5.
a. 1 Cor 15:12-20 Paul uses reasoning and logic flow on Christ’s death.
3) The law of the excluded middle. A statement can be either true or false and no other alternative. It’s either raining or it’s not but it can’t be both in the same place at the same time.
a. Matt 22:41-46 Jesus leads the Jews to a question of who He is.
John 16:12-15 The Spirit of Truth has come to us leading us
Acts 9:22, 17:2, 18:4, 18:19, 18:28 Paul defends the Word with logic and reason
Col 4:5-6 We are to be wise in our speech ready to answer
Titus 1:9 We are to exhort and convict those who contradict truth
These questions on relativity can sometimes best be answered with questions back.
- The lost may believe that religious beliefs just reflect where we are raised.
o If that’s true then it would it also be true that all governing types are equally right: communism, democracy, dictatorship, etc?
- The lost may believe reality is something we shape with our minds.
o If that is true then does anything really exist including the statement itself?
- The lost may believe objective morality is what society/culture makes it.
o If that is true then would they get mad if we take their car because we believe it is ours, or if we take their life because we don’t believe they need to exist?
- The lost may believe Christian beliefs are just one of many ways to make it to heaven.
o If that is true then aren’t you really saying that the Word cannot be true because the Word specifically identifies only one way to heaven. John 14:5-7
