Parable of the Ten Virgins
Matt 25:1-3
- Part of Christ talking with His disciples about His death, the Tribulation, and the final Judgement
- Tradition was that the bridesmaids would wait for the groom with torches to lead the procession to the bride’s new home
What can we learn from the number of virgins?
10 – Completeness of those waiting for Christ, 10 Commandments
5 – God’s abundant grace. 5 loaves for 5000, 5 of each thing in the wilderness tabernacle
If bridesmaids would have typically held torches, why do they have lamps in this parable?
Psalms 119:105 The Word is a lamp for us
Prov 6:20-23 The Word will keep us while we sleep and speak with us while awake
All 10 of the Virgins had lamps with them.
All 10 of the Virgins were waiting on the Lord.
All 10 fell asleep because the wait was long.
What wakes up the Virgins?
1 Thess 4:16 The wakeup call.
All 10 Virgins wake up at the call.
Only 5 had the Holy Spirit reserves of the Word to get them through the wait.
The 5 without tried to borrow then left to find their own oil.
Like the door to the ark in Noah’s time, the door to the wedding was shut.
